A Republican senator sketched out the contours of President Donald Trump's health care overhaul that would shift the burden for coverage to women.
The president has floated a proposal to send federal funding directly to consumers, instead of paying insurance companies to subsidize health care premiums, as Republicans once again consider ways to replace the Affordable Care Act signed into law by President Barack Obama more than 15 years ago.
"We want to send part of that money to new health care savings accounts," Sen. Roger Marshall (R-KS) told Newsmax TV. "But it has to be coupled with a price tagsbill. Americans are greatconsumers. We're going toforce all providers, allhealth care providers toshow you a price tag – andby the way, women make 80 percentof the health caredecisions on where you'regoing to go. They're greatshoppers."
"If we putmoney in your health caresavings account, if weshow you the price tags," Marshall added. "[Conservative economist] Art Laffer says it's goingto bring down the cost ofhealth care $1 trillion. That's $1,000 a month forhard working families."
Marshall also addressed the 79-year-old president's cognitive health after the White House confirmed he had recently undergone a magnetic resonance imaging examination, but Trump told reporters he wasn't sure what part of his doctors were scanning, although he then denied they were concerned about his brain.
"I thinkit's a normal executivelevel type of type ofcheckup," the senator said. "If you went tothe the best wellnesscenters in the country, they're going to orderthat on people probablyover the age of 65, and, bythe way, we all have someatherosclerosis alreadystarting to build up someaging processes, just likeyou would see arthritis inthe joints. But I can tellyou my interactions withthe president – I'm apretty hard worker. I'llwork 100, 110 hours aweek. He outworks me. He'sthe first person I've everknown that works harderthan I do. He runs aroundthat golf course. He goesthrough staff members, youknow, several groups ofthem each day. He's anincredible shape right now, and you talk about sharp. He'splaying three- to four-dimensionalchess right now with timebeing that fourthdimension."
