Republican senator trying to set up a call between Brett Kavanaugh and his sexual assault accuser

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA), who chairs the Judiciary Committee, is reportedly trying to set up a phone call with the committee members, Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and his sexual assault accuser.

According to Bloomberg reporter Laura Litvan, a spokesperson for Grassley revealed the attempt at a phone call, though it wasn't indicated what the purpose was.

"Kavanaugh UPDATE: A spokesman for Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley says the senator is `actively working' to set up bipartisan staff calls with Brett Kavanaugh and the woman accusing him of sexual assault ahead of a planned Thursday cmte vote on the confirmation," she tweeted Sunday.

The committee is scheduled to vote Thursday and Kavanaugh already has one of the lowest support ratings among judicial appointees in history (36 percent). That polling was done just following the hearing and before the accusations became public.

Grassley's spokesperson downplayed the seriousness of the calls while pundits accused the GOP of being in trouble. The spokesperson said that they are routinely held with nominees when updates are given to the nominee's background. Having an alleged survivor confront her alleged rapist, however, has only happened once in the history of Supreme Court confirmations with Clarence Thomas.
