Republican uses footage of opponent's sexual assault testimony to smear her ahead of election

As hotly contested races escalate ahead of the November elections, Republican candidates seem to be getting increasingly desperate, resorting to sloppy attack ads against their opponents.

The race for Michigan governor pits Republican Bill Schuette against Democratic candidate Gretchen Whitmer. In a new ad, Schuette describes his opponent as the "most left-wing ticket in Michigan history."

"Gretchen Whitmer and Garlin Gilchrist are the most extreme Democrat candidates in Michigan history—opposing immigration enforcement, bashing Israel, supporting Hamas. They are an extreme risk we can’t take," the ad darkly intoned.

As the Detroit Metro Times reports, the ad uses footage from a hearing in which Whitmer testifies about her sexual assault. The hearing was about the backlog of rape kits.
