GOP has 'good reason to be terrified' of Alabama embryo ruling: CNN polling expert

CNN polling expert Harry Enten said on Thursday that there's a good reason for Republicans to run away from the Alabama State Supreme Court's ruling that frozen embryos are fully developed children.

Breaking down a new poll on the subject of reproductive rights, Enten explained that the court's declaration that clinics that dispose of frozen embryos could potentially face wrongful death lawsuits was wildly unpopular with voters.

"[Republicans] have good reason to be terrified," Enten said. "I've been waiting for a poll on this but now we do have one."

In all, the poll found that just 31 percent of Americans support the court's ruling that frozen embryos are people and that clinics that destroy them are legally liable, while 66 percent oppose such a proposition.

And when it comes to party breakdown, Enten said that even GOP voters were evenly split about the question, indicating that the issue could be politically poisonous for the GOP were they to embrace a campaign of suing clinics on behalf of frozen embryos.

"There are rarely issues in which you see Republicans and Democrats both sort of this close together," he said. "And this is sort of points out how politically difficult this is for Republicans where their own base is split, Democrats are overwhelmingly opposed, and the American public is overwhelmingly opposed."

The poll also tested support for former President Donald Trump's reported embrace of a 16-week national abortion ban, and Enten revealed that it fared only a little better than lawsuits in defense of frozen embryos.

"So if we look here, a national ban on abortion after 16 weeks of pregnancy, again, this is a bad idea if you're talking about politics," he said. "Because just 40 percent of Americans support it, 57 percent oppose it."
