Republicans tired of 'policy whiplash' as 'untethered president' reels from crisis to crisis: WaPo reporter

The Washington Post's Jacqueline Alemany told MSNBC on Friday that Republicans were growing tired of constant "policy whiplash" as an "untethered" President Donald Trump stumbles from crisis to crisis, often of his own making.

"Logic says that come 2020 the unified party wins the race," said host Yasmin Vossoughian, noting that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell had issued a rare rebuke of the president. "It doesn't necessarily seem like this is a unified party right now."

"I'm not sure logic has driven this administration over the past two years," replied Alemany. "As we get closer to 2020, it's not just the president running for reelection, it's a handful of McConnell's members who are up for pretty tight races. He's looking out for his own members here."

"There's been a ton of policy whiplash over the past few weeks especially," she went on. "The president has become increasingly untethered to the norms and basic protocol, like consulting with Congress about potentially deciding to tackle healthcare off the cuff."

Alemany said that pushback from McConnell and other Republicans may signal Congress is "finally" grasping some "basic logic."

"Maybe we don't want to go through a series of embarrassing confirmation hearings, maybe we should start following again some basic government lessons like pushing people who can get through background checks," she said. "Herman Cain in the 2012 presidential campaign was known for sexual harassment allegations. Is that something the party wants to relitigate going into 2020?"
