In a discussion about Trump's recent attacks on Secretary of Defense James Mattis, including that the general is "sort of a Democrat", CNN military analyst Lieutenant General Mark Hertling slammed the president for his ignorance of military policy.
Hertling, who has sparred with the president in the past was unsparing after host Brooke Baldwin played a clip from Trump's recent interview with "60 Minutes", in which the president claimed he knew more about NATO than his Secretary of Defense.
"I was the very first general where he said that, when I said 'you can't bomb foreign countries and take away their oil as war booty'," said Hertling, who was attacked by then-candidate Trump in 2015.
"He's doing the same thing now with Secretary Mattis, who is in fact kind of an expert on policy, strategy, and Europe specifically," said Hertling, waving off Trump's comments.
"When he was a four-star general he was also in charge of Joint Forces Command, which had the responsibility for helping NATO transform into the 21st century," Hertling added, laughing derisively. "I would put my money on General Mattis every day of the week and twice on Sunday, in terms of knowing more about military policy, theory, and doctrine."
