Road-raging retired NYC cop opens fire on father-son duo, killing younger man: police

A retired New York City police officer and current corrections officer is accused of gunning down a 26-year-old man and wounding his father in an apparent road rage incident.

John Guzy was charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of Derek D. Prindle outside a gym in Bainbridge, New York.

Police said he also wounded 60-year-old Derek S. Prindle, who remains hospitalized.

The 56-year-old Guzy, who retired from the New York Police Department in 2002, was arrested shortly before 2 p.m. Monday, about a half hour after the shootings.

Police aren’t sure what led to the shootings, but they said Guzy did not know either man he shot.

The father-and-son duo was returning home from running errands when they apparently became involved in a dispute with the accused gunman on the road.

Witnesses said they heard at least three gunshots in the parking lot of Peak Fitness, and one witness said she saw two men wrestling while another lay on the ground.

The younger Prindle was shot in the chest and abdomen, but no details were released about his father’s wounds.

The carpenter and film buff was pronounced dead at an area hospital.

Guzy is being held in isolation at the Chenango County Jail, where he was hired in June as a corrections officer.
