Romney campaign meets equal pay question with long silence

Likely GOP nominee Mitt Romney’s quest to label President Barack Obama as the one waging a “war on women” hit a snag Wednesday morning, when, after a long pause on a conference call, his campaign told a reporter they'd "get back to" him on a question about whether the former Massachusetts governor supported equal pay.

In a conference call with reporters, Romney campaign officials were asked by The Huffington Post reporter Sam Stein about the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which allows women greater opportunities to sue for pay discrimination and was signed into law by President Obama in 2009.

"Does Governor Romney support Lilly Ledbetter Act?" Stein asked.

After a few seconds of silence, Romney's economic policy adviser Kevin Hasett chimed replied, "We’ll get back to you on that.”

The law's namesake, Lilly Ledbetter, criticized the Republican candidate for his campaign's lack of support in a statement released by the Obama campaign.

“I was shocked and disappointed to hear that Mitt Romney is not willing to stand up for women and their families," Ledbetter said. "If he is truly concerned about women in this economy, he wouldn’t have to take time to ‘think’ about whether he supports the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act."

The Romney campaign later provided their candidate's position on the law.

“He supports pay equity and is not looking to change current law,” Romney's spokesperson Andrea Saul said to Talking Points Memo.
