Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) shocked with a bleak forecast for his party early Wednesday: Republicans may be locked out of power in Congress for years.
“Dems will get 55 Senate seats and 250+ House seats,” DeSantis posted on X. “Looking at the Senate map and considering such a massive House margin, it is very unlikely Republicans will recapture the Congress in 2028. Might not have a shot at Senate control until 2032.”
He attached a New York Times forecast graphic showing 54 Senate seats leaning toward or won by Democrats, 44 by Republicans and two tossups. The same graphic showed Democrats leading or winning 254 House seats to Republicans’ 172.
DeSantis then suggested the number could climb even higher.
“If Mississippi goes down, that will give Dems 56 Senate seats,” he wrote, sharing Times results that showed Democrat Scott Colom leading Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith by just 28 votes out of more than 945,000 cast. The race may not be settled for days. Mississippi allows provisional ballots to be counted up to five business days after the election, according to the Times.
DeSantis also mourned the outcome in Texas, where Democrats won the Senate and governor’s races.
“Texas has been the most significant Republican state this century. A Democrat sweep of statewide races — and possible capture of the Legislature — takes away one of the anchors of the modern GOP,” he wrote. “A huge loss.”
The posts drew reactions from across the spectrum.
“Fact check: TRUE,” wrote George Conway, an attorney and Trump critic.
Punchbowl News founder Jake Sherman agreed on the House. “DeSantis is right on the House. Rs are going to have to win 30+ seats to win back the majority,” he wrote.
Author and commentator Wajahat Ali shared the post with a one-word reaction: “Folks…”
Some on the right used the moment to relitigate the 2024 primary, which DeSantis lost to President Donald Trump.
“Governor DeSantis is too polite to say it, so I will: You should have nominated him in 2024, you blithering idiots,” wrote Edward Feser, a conservative philosopher at Pasadena City College.
Others sounded the alarm. “Very honest summary. By 2032 America may be lost,” wrote David Vance, a right-wing commentator from Northern Ireland.
Phil Labonte, frontman of the metal band All That Remains and a conservative commentator, wrote, “this means if a democrat wins the white house in 2028 all the worst policy dreams the democrats have are within reach. it might not be too far of a reach to say the constitution itself will be on the ballot.”
Fact check: TRUE.
