'I didn't appreciate his comments': GOP's Ron Johnson warns McConnell over Trump rebuke

Trump-loving Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) on Tuesday threw a brushback pitch at Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) for his rebuke of former President Donald Trump.

According to Politico's Andrew Desiderio, Johnson appeared on local radio and warned McConnell about his criticisms of the former president, who was acquitted in the United States Senate over the weekend on the charge of inciting a riot in the United States Capitol building.

"I think he needs to be a little careful," Johnson said of McConnell's comments. "When the leader of the Senate conference speaks, he has to understand what he says reflects on all of us. And I didn't appreciate his comments, let's put it that way."

Desiderio also reports that Johnson warned fellow Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) that calling witnesses at the impeachment trial and prolonging it would amount to "incitement" of the president's supporters to potentially commit more acts of violence.

Even though McConnell voted to acquit the former president at the conclusion of his impeachment trial, he delivered a blistering statement afterward that suggested Trump could be held criminally responsible for the Capitol riots.

"There is no question that President Trump is practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of that day," McConnell said. "The people who stormed this building believed they were acting on the wishes and instructions of their president. And their having that belief was a foreseeable consequence of the growing crescendo of false statements, conspiracy theories, and reckless hyperbole which the defeated president kept shouting into the largest megaphone on planet Earth."
