A right-wing blogger who defended the fatal shooting of a woman by President Donald Trump’s federal immigration agents in Minneapolis at the start of the year has been arrested and is being held for potential deportation, Bulwark writer Will Sommer first reported on Friday.
Samuel Sey, a Ghanaian-Canadian evangelical activist, previously worked as a community liaison at the Canadian Centre for Bio-Ethical Reform, according to Protestia. His work has since been featured on U.S. right-wing websites including The Blaze, The Daily Wire, and Christian Post, and he currently lives in Ohio.
Sey was booked into the Butler County Jail on Wednesday, according to public records. The only charge listed is “HOLD FOR ICE,” and the record lists the county sheriff’s office in the arresting officer field.
It was not immediately clear why he was detained. Protestia publisher David Morrill wrote that it was “highly unlikely” Sey had “been knowingly violating immigration laws” and that he believed it was likely “a misunderstanding.”
In January, during the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown in Minneapolis, Sey took to X to defend the officer who shot Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother of three.
“The woman would still be alive if she didn’t try to run the ICE agent over. You can be saddened by her death and admit that it was self-defense,” Sey wrote.
Video analysis has cast doubt on the administration’s claim that Good tried to run over agents, and footage shows the agent, Jonathan Ross, firing from the side of her vehicle as it moved.
On multiple other occasions, Sey has defended Trump’s mass deportation agenda.
“If you love America, you should support ICE,” he wrote in one post. “That doesn’t mean every member of ICE will always do the right thing (not even the Church is filled with perfect people). But ICE is a force for justice. We should support them.”
On another occasion, he wrote that God is “against the idealogy (sic) of anti-ICE protestors.”
This is not the first time a defender of Trump has found himself on the wrong end of his immigration machine. Last year, Roberto Mosquera, a Cuban man who once called himself a “super Trump supporter,” was deported to a maximum-security prison in Eswatini.
