Sanders snaps at reporter over Trump's mental health: 'If he was unfit he probably wouldn't be sitting there'

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders on Thursday argued that President Donald Trump would "probably" not be president if he was mentally unfit.

In the wake of a series of damaging excerpts from Michael Wolff's new book, Fire and Fury: Inside Trump's White House, President Donald Trump's attorney announced lawsuits which aim to halt publication and force former White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon to "cease and desist" talking about the president.

At Thursday's press briefing, Sanders was asked if the president believes in the First Amendment in light of the lawsuit threats.

"The president absolutely believes in the First Amendment," she insisted. "The president also believes in making sure that information is accurate before pushing it out as fact when it certainly and clearly is not."

Sanders was also asked if Trump had a reaction to the growing number of people who are concerned that he is "mentally unfit to serve as president" due to some of the anecdotes in the book.

"It's disgraceful," Sanders said of the charge. "If he was unfit he probably wouldn't be sitting there and wouldn't have defeated the most qualified group of candidates the Republican Party has ever seen."

"This is an incredibly strong and good leader," she added. "That's why we had a successful 2017 and why we're going to continue to do great things as we move forward."
