A former CIA official who was law school classmates with newly-resigned Associate Attorney General Rachel Brand explained to an MSNBC panel Friday afternoon that her departure may precede that of the deputy attorney general.
Former CIA chief of staff Jeremy Bash said there are two reasons President Donald Trump is interested in firing Brand's immediate superior in the Russia investigation, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. First, because Trump is quoted as saying he'd like to "get rid of" the deputy AG.
Trump may also want to fire Rosenstein, the former CIA official argued, because he's a witness to the obstruction of justice case against the president because he wrote one of the initial letters justifying the firing of former FBI director James Comey.
"I've thought for a long time that it's going to be very hard for Rosenstein to stay on overseeing the Mueller investigation to the end," Bash said, "and Rachel may have seen the writing on the wall, said 'This thing is coming right for me, I'm out of here.'"
