Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's claims about the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk were so alarming that one former GOP spokesperson wondered if Bessent had "gone insane."
Bessent appeared on Kirk's podcast, "The Charlie Kirk Show," on Wednesday, where he described Kirk's assassination as a "domestic 9/11 moment," referring to the terrorist attack on the Twin Towers in 2001. Tim Miller, host of "The Bulwark Podcast," responded to Bessent's claims on a new episode of "Bulwark Takes" on Wednesday evening.
"Our Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessett, has gone insane," Miller said. "The dude is high on his power, high on his own supply. I don't know what's happening, what is going on in the Barbie house that he has in South Carolina, but Scott Bessant has lost his d--- mind."
Miller was visibly stunned by Bessent's argument. He said the person who killed Kirk was "sick" and "disgusting," but added that Kirk's murder was nothing like 9/11, where more than 3,000 Americans died following the collapse of the towers.
"The idea that we go and look back to 9/11 and say we need to take that security state spy apparatus and use it to target and root out foes, there's no comparison," Miller said.
The Treasury Secretary added that he was looking at ways to use his office to go after left-aligned groups.
"It is deeply alarming what the Treasury Secretary is planning as far as looking at the financing of left-wing groups here in this country," Miller said.
