Senate investigators to subpoena Trump's lawyer -- and make him testify about Russia collusion in public: sources

The Senate Intelligence Committee plans to subpoena President Donald Trump's longtime personal attorney Michael Cohen, multiple sources reported Tuesday.

Sources told Fox News congressional reporter Chad Pergram said the committee wants to make him testify in an open hearing.

Senate investigators abruptly canceled an interview with Cohen on Tuesday, NBC News reported. The investigators believe he broke an agreement not to speak with the media about the closed hearing.

A source told NBC News that the committee now plans to subpoena him. He could be compelled to testify in public.

Cohen and the Senate investigators reportedly had agreed that he would not discuss the sensitive interview with the media. But as the closed hearing started on Tuesday, Vanity Fair published some of his prepared testimony.

"Let me be clear that I am totally innocent of the allegations raised against me in the public square, which are based upon misinformation and unnamed or unverifiable sources,” Cohen had written in the prepared remarks. “I have never engaged with, been paid by, paid for, or conversed with any member of the Russian Federation or anyone else to hack anyone or any organization."

"I have never engaged with, been paid by, paid for, or conversed with any member of the Russian Federation or anyone else to hack the Democratic Party computers; and I have never engaged with, been paid by, paid for, or conversed with any member of the Russian Federation or anyone else to create fake news stories to assist the Trump campaign or to damage the Clinton campaign."

Cohen left the hearing before giving the testimony.

The Democratic and Republican heads of Senate Intelligence panel said they were "disappointed that Mr. Cohen decided to preempt today’s interview by releasing a public statement prior to his engagement."

"The Committee expects witnesses in this investigation to work in good faith with the Senate," they said in a statement.
