Senator mocks Trump for whining about government funding deal: 'We weren't trying to thrill the president'

A member of the bipartisan group of Congress members who spent the weekend at Camp David crafting a deal to keep the government funded knocked the president for whining about it.

"We were not trying to pass something to thrill the president or anybody else," Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT), told MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell Tuesday afternoon after reports that Trump said he is neither "happy" nor "thrilled" about the deal emerged.

The Vermont senator noted that everyone who worked on the bill compromised and "had to give" to make it happen — and that Trump himself had already done the same thing.

"We started off knowing that even though the president gave his solemn word during the campaign that Mexico was going to pay for this wall, that it is not going to be, he is not going to be able to carry through with what he promised the American people," Leahy said.

The senator also added that acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney "has come up with something that doesn't seem to make a great deal of sense," though he did not expound on what he meant.
