Sessions allies 'infuriated' as Trump White House refuses to say he stands by attorney general

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer refused to say if President Donald Trump still had confidence in Attorney General Jeff Sessions this week -- and this slight didn't go unnoticed by Sessions' allies.

Some of the attorney general's allies tell Axios that they were "infuriated" when Spicer declined to give Sessions a vote of confidence during his press briefing on Monday.

"Spicer's passive aggressive 'I haven't talked to the President' dance now has him refusing to defend our own attorney general," one ally fumed. "What an embarrassment. Would he answer the same way if he'd asked about Reince? I don't think so."

Trump has reportedly been furious with Sessions after he recused himself from being involved in the probe of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

In addition to Spicer's remarks on Monday, President Trump also declined to express confidence in Sessions on Tuesday. As the New York Times' Peter Baker reports, Trump only said "thank you" and walked away when asked by reporters if he still has confidence in Sessions' ability to serve as his attorney general.
