Seth Meyers hits Congress for 'thoughts and prayers' adage: 'If you’re not willing to do anything -- just be honest'

“Late Night” host Seth Meyers on Monday resigned himself to the reality of gun violence in the United States, asking leaders to “be honest” about the fact that they’re not interest in taking the actions necessary to minimize the risk.

“Every hour we hear more stories about the incredible bravery exhibited by people who risked their lives to save strangers,” Meyers said during his remarks on Sunday’s horrific massacre in Las Vegas, the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history.

“It always seems like the worst displays of humanity in this country are immediately followed by the best, and then sadly, that is followed by no action at all, and then it repeats itself,” Meyers observed.

“I’m not sure what else I can say,” the host continued. “I also know nothing I say will make any difference at all. But to Congress, I would just like to say: Are there no steps we can take as a nation to prevent gun violence? Or, is this just how it is and how it’s going to continue to be?”

Meyers noted how our nation’s leaders always say the aftermath of a tragedy is “not the time to talk about” gun violence, a sentiment echoed Monday by White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders. Meyers suggested when people make that argument, what they “really mean is there is never a time to talk about it.”

“It would be so much more honest if you would just admit your plan is to never talk about it and never take any action,” Meyers said.

“If you’re not willing to do anything, just be honest and tell us, ‘This is how it is, this is how it’ll continue to be,” he added. “If it’s gonna be thoughts and prayers from here on out, the least you can do is be honest about that.”
