‘Shocking’: Trump is such a GOP nightmare he puts Utah in play for the first time in 50 years

Donald Trump will meet with Republican party leaders in Washington, D.C. Monday and it's possible the conversation will surround what his candidacy will do to the GOP. Trump is such a disaster for the Republican party, for the first time in 50 years the traditionally conservative state of Utah is up for grabs according to a recent Deseret News/KSL poll.

"I believe Donald Trump could lose Utah. If you lose Utah as a Republican, there is no hope," former Utah Gov. Mike Leavitt said.

Clinton's numbers put her only slightly ahead of Trump with 38 percent over 36 percent, however, democratic-socialist candidate Sanders enjoys more than a ten point lead over Trump (48 percent to 37 percent).

"Any matchup in which Democrats are competitive in the state of Utah is shocking," said Chris Karpowitz, co-director of Brigham Young University's Center for the Study of Elections and Democracy.

Trump's meeting Monday will be the first time he's met with Republican party leaders since last fall when he protested President Obama's Iranian nuclear peace deal. The Washington Postreports that the meeting was organized by Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) who endorsed Trump last month and Trump's campaign attorney Donald McGahn.
