According to legal experts, the plea deal that Fulton County District Attorney offered to former Donald Trump lawyer Sidney Powell provides evidence that she has handed investigators a wealth of information that can severely impact the upcoming trial of the former president.
In interviews with the Daily Beast, former federal prosecutor Amy Lee Copeland got right to the point and remarked, "One thing to note is just how favorable this plea deal is for her. She’s been permitted to plead guilty to misdemeanors… to get this good of a deal, she really has to know something.”
As the report from the Beast's Jose Pagliery notes, comments made by a prosecutor in the Georgia courtroom on Thursday provided a clue that Powell will have more than a few things to reveal about a notorious meeting at the White House that was central to the House Select Committee's investigation into the Jan. 6 insurrection.
POLL: Should Trump be allowed to run for office?
Copeland pounced on that hint and added that "the fact that she was in a meeting at the White House, she can testify to what Trump said at that meeting. And we don’t have a whole lot of people who’ve been willing to do that. That’s going to be pretty powerful for the DA, " before suggesting, "She can talk about some of the people who are very high up in this indictment.”
With regard to that meeting, Pagliery wrote, "The meeting appeared to be premised on the idea that they could convince Trump he had the authority to take extreme measures in this time of fabricated crisis," before adding, "They met in private for some 15 minutes before more reasonable White House personnel stepped in to run interference, only to discover that the ragtag band of misfits was driving a wedge between the then-president and his top White House lawyers."
Testifying on that alone, former federal prosecutor Kevin J. O’Brien explained, should provide prosecutors with just the kind of "red meat" that will sway juries.
“She’s someone who would bring out the absolute wildest in Trump. The things he probably said to her would be jaw dropping. To that extent, it’s red meat for the criminal trial,” he elaborated before pointing out that she had Trump's trust and therefore is privy to information that hasn't been explored yet.
“He probably vented to her about all the evil things that were happening to him and how he would wreak vengeance on a second term,” he predicted.
