Stacey Abrams to deliver the Democratic response to Trump's State of the Union

Former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams has been tapped to deliver the Democratic response to Donald Trump's rescheduled State of the Union.

MSNBC host Chris Hayes tweeted Tuesday evening that according to a reliable source, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) called Abrams "three weeks ago to ask her to deliver the Democratic response to the State of the Union."

NBC News' Frank Thorp V later tweeted that Schumer confirmed the call — and that Abrams accepted.

Last year's response came to the SOTU came from Rep. Joe Kennedy (D-MA) and featured themes of unity and kindness as contrasted by Trump and the GOP's partisanship.

"This administration isn’t just targeting the laws that protect us," Kennedy on January 30, 2018. "They are targeting the very idea that we are all worthy of protection."

"For them, dignity isn’t something you are born with, but something you measure by your net worth, your celebrity, your headlines, your crowd size," the representative added. "Not to mention, the gender of your spouse, the country of your birth, the color of your skin, the God of your prayers."
