Starbucks' chair Howard Schultz steps down amid speculation of presidential run in 2020

Executive Chairman of Starbucks, Howard Schultz, has stepped down from his position, and claims have circulated that the socially conscious CEO might run for president in 2020.

According to aNew York Times report, Schultz told the company last year he planned on retiring. He will most likely resign by the end of the month.

Schultz, 64, also alluded that he might run for president in 2020.

“I want to be truthful with you without creating more speculative headlines," Schultz, said in an interview with The New York Times. “For some time now, I have been deeply concerned about our country — the growing division at home and our standing in the world."

Schultz, added: “One of the things I want to do in my next chapter is to figure out if there is a role I can play in giving back. I’m not exactly sure what that means yet.”

When asked about the 2020 presidential election, he said:  “I intend to think about a range of options, and that could include public service. But I'm a long way from making any decisions about the future.”

Schultz said his main goal is to serve the country.  “I want to be of service to our country, but that doesn’t mean I need to run for public office to accomplish that,” he said.

In the meantime, he plans on working on his family foundation, and writing a book about the social responsibility companies have.
