Oath Keepers leader Stewart Rhodes on Thursday was sentenced by Judge Amit Mehta to 18 years in prison for his role in plotting the Capitol insurrection on January 6th, 2021.
In addition to the 18 years in jail, Rhodes will require three years of supervision after getting released from prison.
During the sentencing hearing, Mehta lambasted Rhodes for his role in the deadly riots that sent lawmakers fleeing for their lives.
"A seditious conspiracy... is among the most serious crimes an individual American can commit," he said. "It's an offense against the government, to use force. It's an offense against the people of the country."
Prosecutors had urged a 25-year prison sentence for Rhodes, who was found guilty last year of seditious conspiracy for plotting with his fellow Oath Keepers to breach the Capitol in an attempt to block the certification of President Joe Biden's election win.
According to a sentencing memo released earlier this year, prosecutors argued that Rhodes deserved more prison time than any of his fellow Oath Keepers given his role in plotting and encouraging a violent takeover of the United States Capitol building for the purposes of spurring former President Donald Trump to declare martial law.
Specifically, prosecutors cited the "scope and scale of Rhodes’ conduct in calling for and conspiring to perpetrate violence against the U.S. government to change the results of a presidential election and retaliate against Congress for certifying those results" warrants getting thrown in jail for more than two decades.
