On Friday, a panel hosted by CNN’s Wolf Blitzer bashed Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) for behaving like she had an "open mind" on Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation vote – when she was clearly prepared to vote yes.
Collins gave a nearly 45-minute speech on the Senate floor in support of Kavanaugh, and it hardly seemed like a last minute decision.
CNN's analyst Susan Hennessey told Blitzer Collins' plan backfired.
"She seemed so sure of her position throughout that 45-minute speech as if she had no doubt at all. But she waited for a long time. She kept everyone, including her fellow Republicans on edge, wondering what she was going to do," Hennessey said.
She continued, "She sounded overwhelmingly sure. I think what happened here was she thought that by keeping an open mind or at least pretending to keep an open mind, she was going to allow a process to unfold."
"This process was going to maybe tamp down on some of the tension, give additional confidence to the American people, so this nominee would be sort of less contentious," she said.
"I really think that backfired on her. The FBI investigation was so unsatisfactory, because of the heightened drama her waiting caused," Hennessey concluded.
