'Person of interest' IDed in swatting attacks on Biden administration officials: report

A "person of interest" in Serbia has been connected to a spate of swatting calls aimed at senior Biden administration officials, according to a new report.

The Secret Service has tied more than 100 harassing calls made over the winter holidays — primarily targeting Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency Director Jen Easterly — to a Serbia-located swatter who could soon face charges, CBS News reported Friday.

Agents have seized evidence that includes computers and other electronic devices, according to the report.

Among lawmakers targeted was Rep. Brandon Williams (R-NY) whose Christmas Day was marred by a swatting attack, CBS reports.

"Our home was swatted this afternoon," Williams wrote in a tweet on Dec. 25. "Thanks to the Deputies and Troopers who contacted me before arriving."

The Republican lawmaker also noted, "They left with homemade cookies and spiced nuts."

Williams confirmed that he has been informed of a "foreign national living overseas" has been linked to the incident.

Swatting, considered a form of harassment, usually involves fake caller IDs or some kind of phone spoofing software to dupe law enforcement into sending a heavy response — such as a SWAT unit — to a person's home to investigate baseless claims.

"Traditionally, law enforcement has seen swatters directing their actions toward individuals and residences," according to the FBI, which added that they also are seeing swatters becoming more brazen to target "public places such as airports, schools, and businesses."
