Tapper slams Trump's hypocritical voter fraud 'investigation': He should start with own staff

CNN’s Jake Tapper on Wednesday blistered Donald Trump over his call for a “major investigation” into alleged voter fraud, arguing if the president wants to look into people who are registered to vote in more than one state, he should start with “his top political aide and one of his key cabinet picks.”

In a series of tweets Wednesday, Trump said he “will be asking for a major investigation into VOTER FRAUD, including those registered to vote in two states,” promising his administration will “strengthen up voting procedures” pending the results.

In an interview with ABC’s David Muir to air Thursday, Trump iterated his call for an investigation, insisting it’s his “opinion” that millions of people voted illegally in the 2016 election.

Wednesday, Tapper criticized Trump for his comments, referring to reports that Trump’s chief strategist and senior counselor Steve Bannon is registered to vote in New York and Florida, Trump’s Treasury Secretary pick Steven Mnuchin is registered to vote in New York and California, and Trump’s daughter Tiffany Trump is registered to vote in New York and Pennsylvania.

“The White House has not provided any evidence backing up the president's uncorroborated claim that 3 to 5 million illegal votes were cast in the 2016 election,” Tapper said during Wednesday’s broadcast, adding, “that is of course because no such tangible evidence of widespread voter fraud exists.”

“It did not happen,” Tapper continued. “But it is a belief of the president's, we are told.”

Referring to White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer’s suggestion that the investigation will “look into” California and New York, Tapper pointed out those states, “it might be observed, voted overwhelmingly against Mr. Trump.”

“One of the items the president wants investigated according to his tweets this morning, people who are registered to vote in more than one state,” Tapper said. “He might want to start that investigation by talking to his top political aide and one of his key cabinet picks who are among the many, many voters who in one day was registered in more than one state.”
