The Axios reporter to whom Donald Trump revealed his plan to end birthright citizenship pointed out the biggest irony in the Senate race between Ted Cruz and Beto O'Rourke on MSNBC Friday.
After host Nicolle Wallace pointed out that Cruz "divides Texas Republicans" and many of them hate the senator, Axios national politics reporter Jonathan Swan brought up Cruz's relationship to Trump.
"The irony, of course, is that if he does lose, Donald Trump will have had something to do with it because Trump wrecked him in the [2016 presidential] Republican primary," Swan said.
"No one did more damage to Ted Cruz's political career and political future than President Trump," he added.
The reporter recalled a moment at the 2016 Republican National Convention when Cruz declined to endorse Trump and "needed security to leave."
"It was just the visceral reaction to him and there's still little echoes of it and you hear it around the country," he said. "So it's a bizarre thing seeing the president campaign for him."
