Tennessee woman claims group of men harassed her while voting -- and told her she should be deported

Police in Tennessee are investigating a woman's claims that she was harassed while voting by a group of men who told her that she deserved to be deported.

The Tennessean reports that the woman claims to have been confronted by a group of five or six men as she was leaving her polling place.

The men asked her if she voted, and when she said that she did, they proceeded to insult her.

"They said she should be deported and that it was basically her fault the country was falling apart," Jacob Murrell, the spokesman for Sumner County Democratic Party, told the Tennessean.

It's unclear why they told her that she should be deported, although the Tennessean notes that the woman originally hailed from Hawaii.

Murrell said that he received a phone call about the alleged encounter from a witness who said the men were waiting in a parking lot and targeting certain voters going into the polling place.

Hendersonville Police Department Sgt. Neal Harris tells the Tennessean that his department originally received a call about an incident at the polling place, although he says the caller did not provide enough specifics to investigate.

"We’re trying to get to the bottom of this to see if there is anything to investigate," he tells the publication.
