Texas GOP now fears gerrymandered map will backfire

Less than a day after Texas Republicans muscled through their new redistricting plan, cracks are already showing as some party members admit the map could come back to haunt them. Conservative journalist David Drucker told Morning Joe that while the GOP expected to net up to five new House seats in 2026, the lines they drew may have created far more competitive districts than intended. With much of the map shaded only “light red,” Republicans now worry that instead of padding their majority, they could be fighting to defend as many as ten vulnerable seats. The move, critics note, underscores how gerrymandering often empowers extremists in safe districts while destabilizing the broader party — a gamble Texas Republicans may soon regret.
