Texas Republican who set up racist trust fund for his adult children loses primary election

A Texas Republican narrowly lost his primary race after drawing national headlines for a racist clause in the trust fund he set up for his children.

Former judge Vickers “Vic” Cunningham lost his GOP primary bid for Dallas County commissioner by just 25 votes to attorney J.J. Koch, reported the Dallas Morning News.

"That was totally bonkers," Koch said. "To say that this race was contentious is an understatement. To say that the last four days were bad for the Republican Party is an understatement."

Just days before Tuesday's primary, Cunningham admitted he set up a living trust that rewarded his adult children for marrying another straight, white Christian, and his estranged brother revealed the GOP candidate was a "lifelong racist."

Bill Cunningham, who is married to a black man, said his brother has threatened him in the past, and he showed reporters communications he's had with other family members about the former judge's racism.

The 56-year-old Cunningham held a 10 percent lead over Koch in early voting, before reports about his racist behavior and language attracted widespread coverage.

"Unfortunately we did not prevail," Cunningham said in a Facebook post. "I am acutely aware of my own failings and will counsel with my God, my family, and my friends what path I shall take moving forward."
