‘Textbook case of conspiracy’: Democratic senator says Roger Stone arrest proves Mueller probe finding ‘collusion’

Delaware Democratic Senator Chris Coons told MSNBC on Friday that Roger Stone's arrest may indicate any number of things, but one thing is for certain: President Donald Trump's insistence that special counsel Robert Mueller's probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election is not a witch hunt.

"One of the things that's important about Roger Stone being arrested, this is not some casual low level contributor to the Trump campaign," Coons said, pointing to Stone's long history in Republican politics. He said the indictment led to one of two conclusions.

"Either President Trump himself was actively involved in collusion with the Russians to undermine our 2016 election, or the president surrounded himself on his campaign with a whole circle of people who have now been charged with being actively engaged in criminal activity," he said. "Door number three, where the Mueller investigation is nothing more than a witch hunt and will fail to produce any substantive outcome or indictments, is clearly closed."

Coons added that the indictment "strongly suggests" that Stone "might be the connection point between the Trump campaign's leadership, and Wikileaks and Russian intelligence."

"This strongly suggests there was exactly that connection between the senior-most levels of the Trump campaign, which was a pretty tight knit group by the way and the fruits of the work of Russian intelligence," he said. "This could very well be a textbook case of conspiracy, of collusion to undermine the American presidential election in 2016."
