President Donald Trump announced that he was backing an increase of American troops to Afghanistan this week -- and he insisted that the United States would finally win the 16-year-old conflict once and for all.
However, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said on Tuesday that the goal of the escalation wasn't necessarily to fully defeat the Taliban rebels that have been attacking the American-backed Afghan government for years.
"This entire effort is intended to put pressure on the Taliban, to have the Taliban understand that you will not win a battlefield victory," Tillerson said. "We may not win one, but neither will you. So at some point, we have to come to the negotiating table and find a way to bring this to an end."
Twitter users reacted with anger to Tillerson's statement -- and said that it was wrong to spend more blood and treasure in Afghanistan if simply fighting to a draw was seen as an acceptable outcome.
