‘They’re not on the same planet’: CNN’s Cooper and Acosta ridicule Kellyanne Conway's 'ironic Trump' defense

CNN’s Anderson Cooper on Monday offered a snarky rebuke of the White House response to Donald Trump’s tweet affirming he’s “under investigation,” lampooning the president and those who represent him for “not being on the same page,” if you can call it that.

Cooper was referring to a series of interviews this weekend with Trump attorney Jay Sekulow, who contradicted the president’s own tweets about being under investigation by insisting the president is not under investigation.

“Now, Jay Sekulow is a very influential attorney and advocate and a distinguished member of the Supreme Court bar and appeared on this broadcast many times over the years,” Cooper noted on Monday’s “AC360."

“Perhaps he's not the guy to ask on this," Cooper continued. "In fact, it's almost as if we've all been warned against it, almost like we've been told again and again… what’s that phrase?”

Cooper then played a montage of White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer insisting “the president’s tweets stand for themselves.”

“They speak for themselves,” Cooper said. “Which would mean ‘I am being investigated for firing the FBI director by the man who told me to fire the FBI director. Witch hunt.’”

“Maybe instead of meaning he's under investigation or that he’s not, or that he’s commenting on a Washington Post story, but not under investigation, or is—maybe it's none of those things,” Cooper posited. “Maybe it's something else entirely.”

The CNN host then played a clip of counselor to the president Kellyanne Conway arguing Trump was being “ironic” with his “I am being investigated” tweet.

“That's the president in his 140 characters through his significant social media platform telling everybody, ‘wow look at the irony here,’” Conway said on “Fox and Friends” Monday.

“I honestly do not know what that means,” Cooper said of Conway’s explanation. “I do not know what that means.”

Introducing reporter Jim Acosta, Cooper joked the CNN correspondent “joins us from the White House to clear up any irony there may be.”

“Jim, this seems to be yet another example of the president and those who represent him simply, I don't know, not being on the same page?” Cooper asked. “Is that what it is?”

“I'm not sure they're on the same planet, Anderson.” Acosta replied.
