'This can't be real': Chilling 911 call reveals father's raw emotion after fatally shooting daughter

Newly released audio of a 911 call shows a panicked father's shocked reaction to accidentally shooting his 9-year-old daughter.

The Chicago Tribune has posted an audio recording of 33-year-old Eric Scott Hummel of Hobart, Indiana, calling 911 on June 10 and telling authorities that he accidentally shot his daughter while he was trying to teach his sons to not play with guns.

"I had my gun, and I pulled the trigger," a distraught Hummel told the dispatcher. "I didn't realize there was a bullet in there, and I shot my daughter."

The dispatcher asked Hummel to try to perform CPR on his daughter while he waited for emergency vehicles to arrive, and the father reported that his daughter wasn't breathing and there was "blood... everywhere."

"This can't be real," Hummel said.

Hummel's daughter died roughly 30 minutes after he called 911, after she was taken to the St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart.

According to the Tribune, Hummel has been charged with "neglect of a dependent resulting in death, battery resulting in death to a person less than 14 years old, reckless homicide and two counts of neglect of a dependent."

He was due to make his first court appearance on Wednesday.
