'This is a lie': Harris campaign hits back at Trump claim he had 'most successful' economy

Donald Trump phoned into "The Fox & Friends" to sing his own praises about the economy and claim that it was best when he was leading it.

“If you look at our administration, the most successful administration from the economy standpoint...” Trump said.

The Harris-Walz campaign said, "This is a lie. Trump left office with the worst jobs record since the Great Depression. More Americans now have jobs than they ever did under Trump."

The Washington Post did a side-by-side comparison of the economy under Trump and under President Joe Biden. Even before Trump was hit with the pandemic, he only made 6.7 million jobs. After the pandemic, he lost all of it and then some, with the job gains dropping negative 2.7 million. Biden has created 15.7 million jobs as of July 2024.

"The data doesn’t support Trump’s claim that he had the 'greatest economy in the history of the world,' but he did preside over several years of 2.5 to 3 percent annual growth — well above the norm of about 2 percent," the Post said in its analysis.

"Of course, the pandemic recession hit during Trump’s final year in office, pummeling his record. Growth under Biden has been strong — surging to nearly 6 percent in 2021, 1.9 percent in 2022 and 2.5 percent in 2023. Indeed, the U.S. economy has been the envy of the world for its robust post-pandemic surge, as Biden likes to remind people," the report said, citing an often-used quote from Biden about the American economy.
