'This is how the X-Men started': Internet shocked by astronaut discovery of 'alien bacteria' on International Space Station

It turns out that the truth might be out there after all. According to a Cosmonaut, a swab of the International Space Station revealed bacteria that is not of our world.

"That is, they have come from outer space and settled along the external surface. They are being studied so far, and it seems that they pose no danger," said cosmonaut Anton Shkaplerov to Russia's state-owned TASS news agency.

In 2014, another Russian cosmonaut Vladimir Solovyov claimed that sea plankton and other microorganisms were spotted in cosmonauts' spacewalk samples.

Popular Science refutes the finding, saying that even if the so-called alien bacteria was found on the ISS before launch, it doesn't necessarily mean they came from somewhere outside of the Earth.

They cited a paper published in Astrobiology which suggested space dust colliding with Earth’s atmosphere can propel microbes out of our atmosphere and into space.
