Tony Perkins: My kids won't be gay because I teach them 'the right ways'

Family Research Council president and anti-gay advocate Tony Perkins certainly was pleased Tuesday evening after learning that North Carolina voted to pass the controversial Amendment One measure.

Appearing on CNN's Piers Morgan Tonight on Tuesday, Perkins argued that people become gay because of the "environment they're raised in" and the high divorce rate in America. When host Piers Morgan asked Perkins about whether how he would react if one of his five children came out as gay, the social conservative was confident that would not occur.

“We would have a conversation about it," Perkins said. "I doubt that would happen with my children as we are teaching them the right ways that they are to interact as human beings. We’re not allowing them to be indoctrinated by the education system.”

Perkins recently condemned the makers of Mike and Ike candy for an advertisement that announces the couple's split because he perceived the ad as portraying a same-sex couple.

Amendment One not only bans same-sex marriage in North Carolina, but also prohibits same sex civil unions, domestic partnerships, and protects the state from legal challenges over the amendment.
