Trump 2020 campaign doubled its spending on legal fees in three months thanks to Russia scandal

President Donald Trump's re-election campaign spent $700,000 on legal fees between April and June as the scandal around Russian interference in the 2016 election has intensified, according to The Hill.

Reports filed with the Federal Elections Commission (FEC) say that Trump 2020 campaign committees poured out nearly $700,000 in legal expenses between the beginning of April and the end of June. That figure is nearly twice as high as the amount the campaign spend in its first three months.

Trump 2020 paid $545,000 to the Jones Day law firm, which has represented the campaign in a series of ongoing lawsuits and is currently advising the campaign on legal issues related to Russia.

On Saturday, it was revealed that the re-election campaign paid $50,000 to the law firm of Alan Futerfas, who represents Donald Trump Jr. The payments were made two weeks before the scandal erupted over Trump Jr.'s meeting with Kremlin-aligned lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya.

These fees are only for the legal defense of the campaign itself. Trump's personal lawyer Marc Kasowitz and his team are funded by Trump himself and the White House Special Counsel is paid by the federal government.
