Trump is running again to prove he isn't a loser: former aide
March 06, 2024
Sarah Matthews, a one-time aide to Donald Trump, believes the former president's 2024 campaign is nothing more than a desperate attempt to save face.
While many critics argue Trump hopes to eliminate criminal court troubles, Matthews said during an interview with Nicolle Wallace on MSNBC Wednesday she thinks his reasons are more psychological than logical.
"I think he can't wrap his mind around the fact that he was weak enough to lose to someone that he perceived as weak as [President] Joe Biden," Matthews said. "All he cares about is trying to, I think, prove to people he's a winner."
Wallace prompted this response from Matthews by recalling Yale history Professor Timothy Snyder's book "On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century," noting Trump's supporters love him because he seems like a "strongman."
"The problem with the strongman is he doesn't care about them," Wallace said.
"I think he's only ever cared about himself," Matthews agreed. "I think that it's evidenced by the fact that when he lost the 2020 election to Joe Biden, he did everything in his power to try to stay in power. He tried to overturn a free and fair election and then helped incite a mob to attack our U.S. Capitol."
And while Matthews acknowledged Trump likely hopes a successful 2024 presidential campaign will shield him from legal problems, she rejected the idea that his motives are not self-centered.
"It has nothing to do with helping people and improving their lives," Matthews said. "It's everything to do with improving Donald Trump and protecting himself."
Matthews believes if Trump wins the 2024 presidential election he will appoint loyalists to do his bidding.
"Trump has said that in a second term, he wants to wipe out some of these government agencies and install Trump loyalists who will carry out every demand of his," Matthews said. "This will be filled with yes-men and women who will not push back on him, and they're going to be sycophants."
