One of President Donald Trump's former staffers bashed his comments about Democratic lawmakers telling military members that they can disobey illegal orders.
On Wednesday, some Democratic lawmakers posted a video on social media reminding military members that they swore an oath to the Constitution and not a single leader. Trump responded by calling those comments "seditious behavior" and saying the act could be "punishable by death."
Several GOP members refused to condemn Trump's comments, and White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt appeared to defend the comments on Thursday.
Sarah Matthews, the deputy press secretary during Trump's first administration, discussed Trump's comments during an interview on MS Now on Friday.
"The gaslighting coming from thisadministration is mind-boggling,but not surprising," Matthews said. "Watchingthe White House Press Secretary,Karoline Leavitt, and othersdefend this is absolutelyinsane to me. If this were any other president,we would be havingconversations about the 25thamendment if they were callingfor the opposing party members to behanged."
"And instead, she flipsthis over on how they'reinciting violence," she added. "And to me,it looks like the president isthe one very clearly incitingviolence here. We've had alot of conversations recentlyin the state of our politics, and especially in the aftermathof the horrific death of Charlie Kirk, about the need totone down the rhetoric in thiscountry and dial it back. Butinstead, the president is theone who keeps continuing tojust ratchet it up. And I thinkthat it's really shameful."
