President Donald Trump appears to be neglecting his MAGA base, and that is setting off "alarm bells" among his Republican colleagues, according to one analyst.
Over the past few weeks, Trump's MAGA base has seen him globetrotting around Asia while threatening to wage war in Venezuela and Niger. All the while, domestic issues like a weak job market and persistent inflation continue to harm his constituents.
David Charter, assistant US editor for The Times, argued during a new interview on Times Radio that Trump appears to be ignoring his voters, which could hurt Republicans in future elections.
"This is the type of thing that is setting off alarm bells among Trump's base, actually, because they're already getting rather concerned about his overseas adventures and taking his eye off the ball domestically simply because inflation isn't coming down and food prices are up," Charter said.
"What's he doing with his gallivanting around the world, which has been quite quite a lot in the last few months, and he seems to be trying to increase his reach," he added.
"Americans are wondering where is this all heading," Charter continued. "This adventurism by Trump is exactly what he built his career opposing in a previous iteration of the Republican party, which did think it should go around the world and especially in its own hemisphere, as they call it over here, to change regimes and make sure the people in power are friendly to America."
