President Donald Trump is expected to deliver an address Wednesday night to provide an “important update” on the U.S. war against Iran, sparking fears that the address may be “historic,” and for all the wrong reasons, Zeteo’s Andrew Perez wrote Wednesday.
“When Donald Trump launched his dangerous and very illegal war against Iran, he broke with modern presidential tradition,” Perez wrote in Zeteo’s morning newsletter.
“Rather than give a live primetime address, as is customary, he posted a prerecorded video from Mar-a-Lago. Tonight, he will finally give his first live primetime address about the war… on April Fool’s Day…. begging the question: Is he messing with us?”
The address will follow two major addresses already delivered early Wednesday morning by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer, both of whom warned of impending difficult times as a result of the U.S.-Israeli assault on Iran. As to what Trump’s “important update” will be, Perez laid out several options.
The first option, Perez speculated, could be that Trump would reveal a plan to “cut his losses while pretending he won,” and bring about an end to the conflict without having achieved any of the administration’s stated war objectives. The second option, Perez theorized, could be the announcement of a ceasefire, and the third, a full escalation of the conflict.
The fourth option, Perez mused, could be an announcement that the United States would be invading Kharg Island, an operation that has been described by experts as a logistical nightmare that would lead to "considerable" U.S. casualties. And the fifth and final option Perez speculated would be that Trump boasts about his White House ballroom project, a project that has appeared to take up much of the president’s attention in recent months.
“Today could be a historic day in Trumpland, no matter what the president says at night,” Perez wrote.
