A three-person “conspiracy” aimed at casting President Donald Trump aside after Republicans’ devastating midterm defeat appeared to have kicked off this week, The Bulwark’s Jonathan Last argued in an analysis published Thursday.
The “frontman” of the conspiracy, Last argued, was none other than Vice President JD Vance, who on Wednesday directly blamed the GOP’s election losses on Trump’s decision to launch his now deeply unpopular war against Iran.
While Vance’s remarks were widely seen as an attempt to position himself for a 2028 presidential run by distancing himself from Trump, whose approval among Americans has reached career lows, Last pointed to two other prominent conservatives who, he argued, appeared to be working in coordination with Vance.
Within an hour of Vance publishing his post-midterm analysis on social media, Donald Trump Jr. publicly backed Vance’s assessment, saying “every word” was accurate.
“This was the second time [Trump Jr.] has stepped out to criticize his father,” Last wrote. “By all appearances, Vance and Trump Jr. have been working behind the scenes to undercut Trump’s war. Now they’ve both come out in public.”
The third figure in the alleged conspiracy — which Last dubbed a “pretty smart operation” — was conservative media figure Tucker Carlson, who declared Tuesday to be the official “end of the Trump era,” and days earlier, warned that Trump was considering using nuclear weapons against Iran in the days following the midterms.
“Tucker is the guy in touch with Republican voters,” Last wrote. “He’s carved out a spot as a principled MAGA expat, establishing trust with disillusioned Trump supporters so that when the putsch happens, he can vouch for JD. Tucker will lay hands on Vance and insist that he’s not some [Secretary of State Marco] Rubio-esque elite Deep Stater, but is a true America First patriot.”
Trump Jr.’s role in the alleged conspiracy, Last argued, was to create a permission structure for Trump’s most loyal followers to back a Vance presidential ticket, despite the vice president having publicly broken with Trump.
“What does Don Jr. do? Vance needs to push Trump aside without being seen as a traitor to the Trump bitter-enders,” Last wrote. “The best way — the only way — to do that is to work in concert with someone inside the Trump family. How could Vance be betraying Trump if Trump Jr. is working with him!?!?”
The options available to Vance, Last suggested, were threefold: try to pressure Trump to adopt policies “he thinks will improve the president’s approval,” try to push Trump “into retirement,” or resign himself, an “incredibly risky” move that could “also be high-reward.” Regardless of which form the alleged conspiracy takes, “the conspiracy to get rid of Daddy Trump is coming from inside the house,” Last argued.
