Trump punts on abortion — now says it will be entirely up to states

Former President Donald Trump on Monday morning essentially punted when it comes to his stance on supporting women's reproductive rights by arguing that the issue will be entirely left up to the states.

In a video posted on his Truth Social platform, Trump once again praised the decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, which he falsely claimed allowed women to get abortions even after having given birth.

He then pivoted to discussing what his policy would be in a second administration.

"The states will determine by vote or legislation or perhaps both, and whatever they decide must be the law of the land," he said. "Many states will be different. Many will have a different number of weeks, or some will have more conservative than others and that's what they will be. At the end of the day, this is all about the will of the people."

Trump for months has struggled to come up with a coherent message on abortion, and has toyed with implementing a national ban on abortion at 16 weeks of pregnancy or later.

However, the abortion issue has been a major vulnerability for Republicans ever since the overturn of Roe v. Wade, and Trump apparently thought that any kind of national restrictions were too risky to endorse in an election that he may need to win in order to avoid being thrown in jail.
