Judge Cannon's lack of experience has slowed Trump's trial to a crawl: Legal expert

In a deep dive comparing the judges overseeing the two federal indictments filed against Donald Trump, a legal expert noted that Judge Aileen Cannon's Mar-a-Lago stolen documents case is moving at a snail's pace compared to Judge Tanya Chutkan's.

According to the Wall Street Journal report, Chutkan has been quick to make rulings on motions from both sides, while days go by before Cannon either calls a hearing or finally makes a ruling.

Both cases are being prosecuted by special counsel Jack Smith.

Asked about the slower and ostensibly more deliberative pace in Florida compared to Washington, D.C., Nova Southeastern University law professor Robert Jarvis dismissed accusations of deliberate foot-dragging by Cannon and cited her limited experience with trials despite being handed a lifetime appointment to the federal bench.

“Take the politics out of it,” he said in an interview with the Journal. “She’s a new judge who has very little experience in criminal cases and she isn’t sure what to expect.”

He added that, according to information that was provided to the Senate during her appointment hearings, she had only worked four cases as a prosecutor.

Jarvis added that the judicial district she represents provides her with little in the way of experienced jurists to turn to for guidance.

“She’s stuck in Fort Pierce,” Jarvis said, where she can’t “walk down the hall and pop in on another judge and say, ‘Joe, what do you think?’”
