Trump and Pence 'laying the groundwork for voter suppression' with new election integrity commission: report

New documents reveal that Vice President Mike Pence is spearheading an "election integrity commission" -- and according to one civil rights advocate, the vice president's commission is making the case for voter suppression.

The letter sent Wednesday by Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, who is leading the "anti-voter fraud" commission, was sent to every state and claims the commission is tasked with "studying the registration and voting processes used in federal elections" and submitting them to President Donald Trump.

The letter was published on Twitter by Vanita Gupta, a former head of the Department of Justice's civil rights division, who is now President and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights. In her tweet, Gupta claims "Pence and Kobach are laying the groundwork for voter suppression, plain and simple."

Among the questions asked of the states in the letter, Kobach requested information about "instances of voter fraud or registration fraud" in each state, as well as "election-related crimes."

The letter also requests "full voter rolls" that include full name, party affiliation, and the last four digits of the voter's social security number, as noted by Washington Post reporter Christopher Ingraham on Twitter. The information will be "made public," as per the letter.
