President Donald Trump is historically unpopular less than a year into his second term in the White House, according to new polling.
The president's approval rating plummeted to 39 percent in a new CNN poll, and the network's chief data analyst Harry Enten explained that the 79-year-old president's popularity was lower than any of his predecessors.
"It turns out that loveor presidencies are not betterthe second time around, according to the Americanpeople, because what are wetalking about here?" Enten said. "Trump's termhas been, was a success or afailure. You know, back in Aprilof 2024, when it came to termnumber one, the majority of Americans said that Donald Trump's first term in officewas a success, 55 percent. That's a bigreason why he was able to get asecond term in office. They lookback fondly upon his first termin office, but now come to thisside of the screen now, afterterm two, year one. How doAmericansmericans view it? Look at thata failure, fail, fail, fail – 58 percent.Just 42 percent say a success."
"Thesenumbers look a lot more likewhat it did about six monthsinto Trump's term number onethan it did looking back uponthe entirety of Trump's termnumber one, which, of course, gave him that second term inoffice," he added. "The clear majority, 58 percent, nearly three in five Americans say itis a failure."
Enten placed the president's disapproval rating into historical context.
"Now this is alittle bit difficult, right, because Trump has had twopresidencies, right," Enten said. "Otherpeople who are say a year intoterm number two, in fact, havehad a continuous term, but we'regoing to try and do it for youright here, which is essentially –okay, term or terms have been afailure about a year and a termnumber two. You see this for Donald Trump right here, 58 percent, term number two, first year, 58 percentsay failure. Come here, look atthis: Who's the next closest, George W. Bush, 52 percent said hispresidency had been a failure about a year into term numbertwo. So Trump is even worse thanGeorge W. Bush after [Hurricane] Katrina, after a long period in the Iraqwar, and this is really, reallybad when you compare it toGeorge W. Bush."
"Barack Obama was48 percent, and then Bill Clinton waydown here at 26 percent," Enten continued. "Of course, hisapproval was sky high. But thebottom line is this about a yearinto term number two, Trump'snumbers look worse than anyother president in which eitherCNN or the Pew Research Centerhas asked this question. Theonly one really close, Joe Biden. Joe Biden, if you look here, wasat 57 percent failure in term one. However, term one, this is termtwo. But he's even doing apoint worse, though within themargin of error."
"Soyou just go across this poll andyou look at this, not just thenumbers right here, right now," he added, "but what people see into thefuture and how people vieweverything, and it's just a bigF-A-I-L."
