Trump sons' assassination conspiracies fuel risk of 'bloodshed': expert

Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump are continuing to push unfounded claims that President Joe Biden or the Democratic Party had something to do with orchestrating the assassination plot against former President Donald Trump, reported Mother Jones Tuesday — and it's pushing the country closer to widespread violent unrest.

The attack was carried out by 20-year-old Thomas Crooks, who fatally shot a rallygoer at a Trump event in Pennsylvania with an AR-15 style rifle before injuring Trump and two others.

Crooks' motive in unknown and he was killed seconds after the shooting.

But Trump allies, including his two sons, continue to run wild with conspiracy theories. “I said that the Democrats would stop at absolutely nothing,” said Eric on Maria Bartiromo's Fox News show, while Don Jr. said on the Megyn Kelly Show, “They’re trying to jail their political opponents. They’re now trying to kill him.”

All of this is just going to turn up the heat further, the Mother Jones report warned.

"This continuing vilification adds to what law enforcement and threat assessment sources have told me is a paramount risk headed toward the election: potential bloodshed stemming from Donald Trump’s long-running campaign of incitement, including his message that he is supposedly the victim of a sweeping conspiracy by his political opponents," wrote Mark Follman.

"It's part of a long pattern of Trump and his associates fanning violent conflict, which contributed most infamously to the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol over unfounded notions of a rigged election."

Even after these attacks, the GOP seems to delight in them, wrote Follman — for instance, Don Jr. mocking the brutal home invasion and hammer assault on the husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).

In the end, wrote Follman, Trump's proclamation at his convention speech this month that “bad things are going to happen,” may well be a self-fulfilling prophecy.
