'Step up and be a leader': GOPer's wife pelted with anonymous texts over speaker vote

Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE) has faced a new level of personal harassment over his commitment to vote against Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) for House Speaker, reported POLITICO's Olivia Beavers: anonymous texts to his wife Angie, demanding he change his vote.

"Talk to your husband tell him to step up and be a leader and help the Republican Party get a speaker," said one anonymous text. "There's too much going on in the world for all this going on in the Republican Party you guys take five steps forward and then turn around take 20 steps backwards no wonder our party always ends up getting screwed over."

"Why is your husband causing chaos by not supporting Jim Jordan? I thought he was a team player," said another text, with the sender following up by saying, "Your husband will not hold any political office ever again. What a disappoint and failure he is." To which Angie responded, "He has more courage than you. You won't put your name to your statements."

Jordan, a far-right firebrand within the GOP caucus, was nominated for speaker after House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) stepped aside, when it became clear he didn't have the votes to move forward.

But Jordan didn't do much better in the first ballot held on Tuesday, with 20 Republicans defecting against him, leaving him far short of the votes he needed.

Republicans are reportedly preparing to hold another vote later in the week, hoping to sway some of the holdouts.
