'Baby bonuses': Trump admin devising ways to trigger 'traditional' family population boom

President Donald Trump's administration is on the hunt for ways to coax women into having more babies.

The United States' birth rate has been falling since 2007 and New York Times reporter Caroline Kitchener called it, “A warning of a future in which a smaller workforce cannot support an aging population and the social safety net," adding, “If the birthrate is not turned around, [different groups] fear, the country’s economy could collapse and, ultimately, human civilization could be at risk.”

One of the ideas under consideration is a "baby bonus," which would provide new parents with $5,000 after the baby is born.

Trump spoke out in 2023 about wanting more births during the Conservative Political Action Conference.

“We will support baby booms and we will support baby bonuses for a new baby boom,” Trump said then. “I want a baby boom.”

While Trump spent the 2024 campaign promising cheaper IVF for anyone who wants and needs it, there are further ideas the administration is developing to persuade women to have more children.

One potential plan being discussed is for the government to "fund programs that educate women [about] their menstrual cycles — in part so they can better understand when they are ovulating and able to conceive," the report said.

Activist Simone Collins sent Trump proposed executive orders that would award women who have had more than six children, the report said. Collins suggested he call it the “National Medal of Motherhood."

The report noted that "Project 2025," a guide for the second Trump administration devised by former advisors and other conservatives, details ways to “restore the family as the centerpiece of American life.”

However, the report explains, the definition of what constitutes a family is more narrowly defined as a male-female married couple with children.

It "leaves out many families that don’t conform to traditional gender roles or family structures," the Times said.
